LinkAir Modernizes Fleet: Phases Out Boeing 737-8 and Embraer Jets, Welcomes Airbus A320neo

Toronto, September 14, 2024 — LinkAir, a fast-growing Canadian airline, has announced a series of strategic decisions to modernize its fleet and optimize its operations. As part of this plan, the airline will retire its Boeing 737-8 and Embraer regional jets in favor of the fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo and the larger 321neo on select routes, marking a major shift in LinkAir's fleet strategy.

The transition, which aligns with LinkAir’s broader sustainability and expansion goals, will see the Boeing 737-8 and Embraer E175 aircraft gradually phased out. The airline currently operates 6 Boeing 737-8s and 3 Embraer E145s, both of which have been integral to LinkAir's operations on domestic and transborder routes. However, the move to the A320neo reflects a focus on fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and improved passenger experience.

Boeing 737-8 Retirement

The Boeing 737-8, in service with LinkAir since 2017, will be fully retired shortly. LinkAir’s CEO, Sarah Thompson, emphasized the importance of the shift, stating, “While the Boeing 737-8 has served us well, the Airbus A320neo and 321neo represent the future of our fleet. Its advanced technology and superior fuel efficiency align with our long-term sustainability goals and will help us deliver a more comfortable travel experience for our passengers.”

This move follows LinkAir’s recent agreement to purchase 25 A320neo aircraft, with an option for 15 additional units, as part of its modernization plan. The deal allows LinkAir the flexibility of modifying some of those orders for A321neos. The A320neo’s 20% increase in fuel efficiency, quieter engines, and lower emissions make it a strategic choice for the airline as it grows its route network across North America.

LinkAir Vice-President Richard Dawn states "Airbus provided us great flexibility in this deal, allowing the option of selecting one of two aircraft depending on our needs." The airline current utilizes the A321neo on select long haul routes. When asked for any indication of plans to expand to wide-body, Dawn was tight lipped. "Right now we are exploring all our options for a strategic growth plan that meets the travelling needs of Canadians, and we remain committed to connecting Canada to the world."

Embraer E145 Phase-Out

LinkAir also announced that it will retire its fleet of Embraer E145 regional jets. These aircraft have played a pivotal role in the airline’s short-haul operations, particularly within Canada and the northeastern United States. However, as LinkAir continues to expand, the focus has shifted to larger, more efficient aircraft that better align with the airline’s growth strategy.

“We have great respect for the Embraer jets and their contribution to LinkAir’s development,” said Thompson. “But to maintain our competitive edge and meet our sustainability targets, it’s essential that we modernize our regional fleet alongside our mainline operations.”

Airbus A320neo Integration

The Airbus A320neo will gradually take over many of the routes currently served by the Boeing 737-8 and Embraer E175, boosting seat capacity and operational efficiency. Deliveries of the new aircraft will begin in early 2026, with the full order expected to be fulfilled by 2028.

Airbus’s Vice President of Sales for North America, James O’Connor, praised the partnership, saying, “LinkAir’s decision to embrace the A320neo is a forward-thinking move that will position them for success in an increasingly competitive market.”

As LinkAir continues its rapid growth, these fleet changes signal the airline’s commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and an improved passenger experience, ensuring it remains a strong player in the North American aviation market.
